Saab Secures $904 Million Contract to Integrate Advanced Combat Systems for German Navy’s MEKO A-200 DEU Frigates

Swedish defense and security firm Saab has been awarded a significant contract, valued at approximately $903.9 million (equivalent to 8.8 billion Swedish Kronor), by German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). This pivotal agreement positions Saab as the primary provider and integrator of the sophisticated combat systems and sensor suites for the German Navy’s new MEKO A-200 DEU class frigates.

Under the terms of the deal, Saab will undertake the supply and integration of these critical systems for the initial batch of four frigates. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2029 and conclude by 2032. The contract also encompasses provisions to equip potential future vessels, should the German government exercise options for additional frigates of the same class.

The comprehensive technological package supplied by Saab will feature its highly regarded 9LV Combat System, which integrates both the Combat Management System (CMS) and the Fire Control System (FCS). Complementing this, the frigates will be equipped with a robust array of sensors, including the Sea Giraffe 4A long-range surveillance radar, the Sea Giraffe 1X multi-function radar, and a variety of passive sensor solutions designed to bolster situational awareness and threat detection capabilities. Furthermore, Saab will furnish advanced composite superstructures, contributing to the frigates’ reduced radar cross-section for enhanced stealth.

The German Federal Parliament’s Budget Committee initially approved the procurement of four MEKO A-200 DEU class frigates. These cutting-edge vessels, which represent the largest surface combatant order in TKMS’s history, will be constructed in Germany by the prime contractor. The German government opted for the MEKO A-200 DEU platform following a reassessment of the F126 frigate program, citing escalating costs and delays in the delivery schedule. The inaugural MEKO A-200 DEU frigate is anticipated to be delivered to the German Navy in 2029.

Developed from the established MEKO A-200 design, the MEKO A-200 DEU variant is engineered for versatile mission profiles. It is capable of executing demanding roles in anti-air warfare (AAW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and electronic warfare (EW). Beyond conventional combat operations, these multi-role frigates are also designed to support maritime security, patrol and interdiction missions, special forces operations, search and rescue (SAR), and humanitarian aid efforts.
