Bogotá, Colombia has finalized a significant defense procurement agreement with Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer for the acquisition of the C-390 Millennium multi-mission transport aircraft. This strategic move aims to substantially enhance the operational capabilities of the Colombian Air and Space Force (FAC).
Embraer confirmed the signing of the contract for two C-390 Millennium aircraft. The comprehensive agreement encompasses not only the advanced aerial platforms but also a complete suite of mission equipment, an integrated services and logistical support package, and an extensive industrial cooperation program meticulously tailored to meet Colombia’s specific regulatory requirements.
The C-390 Millennium aircraft slated for integration into the Colombian Air and Space Force’s inventory are designed to execute a broad spectrum of missions. These include critical humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, robust cargo and personnel transport, precision paratrooper and cargo air-drop operations, and vital aerial refueling capabilities. A key strategic advantage highlighted is the aircraft’s built-in connectivity and data-sharing infrastructure, enabling seamless integration and interoperability with Colombia’s recently procured Gripen fighter aircraft. This will significantly elevate the nation’s operational readiness, joint force capabilities, and overall interoperability across its air assets.
Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, expressed profound honor regarding the FAC’s selection of the C-390 Millennium. “This decision further strengthens our more than 35-year partnership with the Colombian Air and Space Force, which began with the integration of the EMB-312 Tucano and subsequently the A-29 Super Tucano into their fleet,” stated da Costa Junior. “The C-390 will fundamentally transform Colombia’s air transport and aerial refueling capabilities, setting a new benchmark for operational excellence.”
The new-generation C-390/KC-390 Millennium has rapidly emerged as a preferred tactical airlifter globally. Beyond its launch customer, the Brazilian Air Force, the platform has been chosen by the air forces of Portugal, Hungary, South Korea, the Netherlands, Austria, Czechia, Uzbekistan, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, Slovakia, and Lithuania. Esteemed for its exceptional payload capacity, reliability, versatility, and superior performance, the C-390 Millennium is engineered to meet the demanding tactical and strategic mission requirements of air forces worldwide. Its design inherently facilitates full interoperability among diverse users, thereby strengthening multinational joint operational capabilities.
In a related development this past July, Embraer announced the delivery of the first C-390 Millennium transport aircraft to Czechia, just 20 months after the contract signing. The official ceremony at Kbely Air Base in Prague was attended by high-ranking officials including Czech Deputy Minister of Defense Jaromír Zůna, Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces General Karel Řehka, Czech Air Force Commander Major General Petr Tománek, and Embraer CEO Bosco da Costa Junior. This swift delivery underscored Embraer’s agility and commitment to efficiently respond to customer operational needs, further solidifying the C-390 Millennium’s position as the “new standard” in medium-lift tactical air transport. Czech Ministry of Defense officials affirmed that the integration of the first C-390 Millennium represented a pivotal moment for their armed forces, significantly boosting their capacity for personnel, equipment, and humanitarian aid transport, thereby reinforcing national needs and NATO solidarity for years to come.
