US Envoy Reveals Turkey Tracked Israeli Strike Aircraft, Prompting Deconfliction Efforts

Washington’s Special Representative for Syria and Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, has disclosed that Turkish defense systems detected Israeli aircraft transiting towards Turkish sovereign airspace during an airstrike on Syria’s Abu Zuhur Air Base. Barrack indicated that Ankara likely initiated preparations for a defensive military response to the perceived incursion, underscoring the severe risk of military escalation between the two regional powers.

Speaking exclusively to Reuters, Barrack confirmed that Turkish authorities were not afforded prior notification of the Israeli operation. He highlighted the volatile implications of such uncoordinated military actions in a highly contested airspace, acknowledging that the incident could have easily spiraled into a direct military confrontation. “Fortunately, prudent actors on all sides managed to avert a broader crisis,” Barrack stated.

Following the August 18, 2026, Israeli airstrikes on the Abu Zuhur facility in northwestern Syria, located approximately 70 kilometers east of the Turkish border, the United States has intensified efforts to establish a robust trilateral deconfliction mechanism. This crucial framework aims to enhance communication and prevent inadvertent military encounters among Turkey, Israel, and Syria. Barrack suggested that the Israeli strikes were potentially motivated by a perception, accurate or otherwise, that Turkey might be increasing its operational footprint at the Syrian base in the near future.

The necessity of a comprehensive deconfliction protocol has become paramount, Barrack asserted, especially to mitigate future communication breakdowns. “We are working diligently to implement such a mechanism to prevent potential future miscommunications. Our immediate priority is to de-escalate tensions and facilitate a more measured approach to regional security dynamics,” he explained. Barrack also revealed that the U.S. currently brokers an information-sharing and dialogue platform among the parties, emphasizing the need to bolster its resources. He stressed the financial prudence of investing in these diplomatic mechanisms, noting they are “significantly more cost-effective than relying on potential military engagements as a form of communication, which could incur costs running into hundreds of millions of dollars.”

The Israeli assault involved eight precision airstrikes targeting the runway and logistics facilities of the Abu Zuhur Military Air Base. While the Israeli military refrained from official comment on the operation, Turkey swiftly condemned the strikes as a flagrant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Syrian Arab Army utilizes the Abu Zuhur Air Base primarily as a training center, and these recent attacks coincide with accelerated efforts by Damascus to modernize and restructure its air force capabilities.
