Arleigh Burke-Class Destroyer Crippled by Major Power Failure in Indo-Pacific, Prompting Readiness Scrutiny

A critical technical malfunction in the generator systems of the USS Benfold, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, led to a four-day complete loss of electrical power aboard the vessel last month. This severe engineering casualty occurred while the destroyer was conducting routine operations in the Indo-Pacific region, leaving its crew without essential services including potable water, mess hall facilities, sanitation, and environmental controls for an extended period.

While the U.S. 7th Fleet spokesperson, Lieutenant Commander Matthew Comer, refrained from specifying the exact location of the incident, numerous media outlets reported the power failure occurred in the contested waters of the South China Sea. During its operational duress, the USS Benfold received crucial support from the George Washington Carrier Strike Group, notably including meals supplied by the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls.

The malfunction, which began on July 24, necessitated the towing of the destroyer by contracted tugboats to Subic Bay in the Philippines on July 28 for urgent repairs. Upon arrival at the port, specialists from the Japan Ship Repair Facility-Regional Maintenance Center were on hand to assess the damage. Lieutenant Commander Comer commended the crew, noting they “demonstrated exceptional resilience, courage, professionalism, and unwavering resolve” during the ordeal, confirming no injuries were sustained.

Following the vessel’s arrival in the Philippines, arrangements were swiftly made to provide the crew with off-ship accommodation and fresh provisions. Electrical power was successfully restored to the USS Benfold on July 30. All necessary repairs were completed by August 7, after which the destroyer shifted berths for refueling. By August 8, when the USS Benfold departed Subic Bay, all engineering, combat systems, and crew support systems were reported to be fully operational. The root cause of this technical malfunction remains subject to an ongoing official investigation.

This incident, however, unfolds against a backdrop of broader concerns regarding fleet readiness and sailor welfare. It follows closely on the heels of reports detailing significant morale and mental health challenges aboard another U.S. Navy capital ship, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln has endured an arduous nine-month deployment, part of which involved supporting U.S. military operations against Iran.

Recently, Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), visited the USS Abraham Lincoln after revelations of at least two attempted suicides by sailors jumping overboard during its extended tour of duty. While acknowledging the inherent difficulties of prolonged sea deployments, Admiral Cooper asserted that the Lincoln maintained the lowest number of mental health-related incidents among the Navy’s eleven active aircraft carriers.

In response to these burgeoning concerns, U.S. lawmakers have intensified pressure on the Navy for comprehensive briefings regarding the conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and detailed explanations concerning its extended operational schedule. Congressional members have specifically requested in-depth reports addressing critical issues such as basic supplies, water availability, plumbing, mental health services, deck safety protocols, and postal services across the fleet.
