South Korea Transfers Full Aegis Destroyer Maintenance to Private Sector in Landmark Deal

The Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy has initiated an unprecedented strategic shift by fully entrusting the comprehensive overhaul of a critical Aegis destroyer to a private industrial partner. A definitive contract has been awarded to Hanwha Ocean for the entirety of the factory-level maintenance of the ROKS Sejong the Great, the lead ship of its formidable class, signaling a new approach to naval fleet sustainment.

Under the terms of this agreement, Hanwha Ocean is slated to commence the deep-level maintenance of the 7,600-ton destroyer in September 2026. This extensive undertaking is projected to last approximately six months, with the anticipated completion date set for March 2027.

This contract marks a significant milestone as it represents the first occasion the ROK Navy has delegated the complete spectrum of maintenance, repair, and modernization activities for a major surface combatant to a private firm. The scope of the factory-level maintenance encompasses a meticulous examination of all integrated systems and components aboard the ROKS Sejong the Great. Key tasks will include partial dismantling of the vessel, followed by the replacement of life-expired or aging parts to ensure optimal system performance, reliability, and extended operational readiness. Beyond the vessel’s technical systems, the project also prioritizes crew welfare and operational effectiveness by including planned upgrades to living quarters, lavatories, and other habitability areas.

The overhaul is structured as a collaborative effort, with Hanwha Ocean coordinating with specialized shipyards and equipment manufacturers throughout the process. Furthermore, certain phases of the project will actively involve small and medium-sized South Korean enterprises, thereby bolstering the domestic defense industrial base and supply chain.

The ROK Navy’s primary objective in outsourcing these extensive maintenance activities is to alleviate the operational burden on its uniformed personnel. By reallocating these significant responsibilities, the Navy aims to enable its crew to dedicate greater focus to critical operational training, combat readiness exercises, and core naval duties, ultimately enhancing the overall effectiveness and readiness of the fleet.
