Spain Selects Hanwha K9 Thunder for Artillery Modernization, Marking Western European Debut

South Korean defense giant Hanwha Aerospace has finalized a significant implementation contract with Spanish defense and technology firm Indra Sistemas for the export of its renowned K9 Thunder 155mm self-propelled howitzer and related support systems. This landmark agreement is a cornerstone of Spain’s ambitious €4.55 billion ($5.28 billion equivalent) tracked artillery modernization program, poised to significantly enhance the capabilities of its ground forces.

The deal, officially announced by Hanwha Aerospace to the Korea Exchange, represents the K9 Thunder’s inaugural entry into the demanding Western European defense market. With this acquisition, Spain becomes the eleventh nation globally to integrate the battle-proven 155mm self-propelled artillery system into its inventory, further solidifying the K9’s international standing.

While the precise financial value of the contract, the definitive number of systems to be delivered, and the detailed delivery timeline have not been publicly disclosed due to commercial confidentiality, key financial terms have emerged. An initial 20% down payment is stipulated for immediate disbursement upon contract signing, followed by a subsequent 5% advance payment scheduled before the close of 2026.

This comprehensive modernization initiative seeks to replace the Spanish Army’s aging fleet of M109 self-propelled howitzers with advanced, next-generation 155mm tracked artillery capabilities. A prior binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Hanwha and Indra, executed in March 2026, had outlined plans for the potential development and production of 128 K9-based howitzers, complemented by 120 ammunition resupply vehicles, 21 recovery vehicles, and 11 command and control vehicles. The exact final configuration under the recently signed implementation contract is pending further specification.

Under the terms of this strategic partnership, Hanwha Aerospace will serve as the primary technology provider, supplying the core K9 platform and essential components. Indra Sistemas, a leading Spanish defense and technology entity, will assume responsibility for the in-country production of these sophisticated vehicles, as well as the intricate integration of mission systems, communication infrastructure, advanced command and control (C2) solutions, and comprehensive situational awareness functionalities tailored to Spain’s specific operational requirements. The program envisions a customized variant of the K9 Thunder, meticulously optimized for the unique demands of the Spanish armed forces.
