Ankara, Turkey – Turkish defense industry behemoth ASELSAN has marked a significant milestone with its innovative GÜRZ Air Defense System, a groundbreaking hybrid solution designed to redefine close-range air defense concepts. The system demonstrated its formidable operational capabilities through successful live-fire field tests, concluded on September 5, 2026, showcasing its integrated prowess in a singular, multi-role platform.
The GÜRZ system is engineered to provide a layered defensive shield against the increasingly complex array of modern battlefield threats. Its advanced architecture incorporates a cutting-edge quad-faced Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, sophisticated electro-optical (EO) sensor suites, and robust integrated communication systems. These components enable the GÜRZ to detect, track, and engage aerial targets with exceptional accuracy. During the recent test series, the seamless performance and precise range accuracy of both the radar and optical tracking systems were confirmed with a high success rate.
Drawing upon the proven capabilities from ASELSAN’s acclaimed HİSAR and KORKUT projects, the GÜRZ system delivers potent offensive power. It features a 35mm KORKUT cannon for neutralizing close-range aerial threats, complemented by launchers in its rear section carrying four SUNGUR and four GÖKSUR air defense missiles. This dual-weapon configuration provides deterrence against more distant and highly maneuverable targets. Notably, the GÖKSUR missile proved its superior agility and precision during tests, flawlessly adhering to its expected trajectory despite demanding evasive maneuvers.
First publicly showcased in its initial serial production configuration at SAHA EXPO in May 2026, ASELSAN CEO Ahmet Akyol had then affirmed GÜRZ as a “real product” poised for rapid integration into service. The successful live-fire trials are a crucial step in the operational validation process, transitioning the ambitious system from prototype stages to full-scale deployment readiness.
Positioned as a more advanced and NATO-standard compliant counterpart to systems like the Russian Pantsir, the GÜRZ carries substantial strategic value. It is anticipated to significantly bolster the air defense capabilities of both the Turkish Land Forces and the Turkish Air Force. Furthermore, the system’s planned delivery in both 6×6 and 8×8 vehicle configurations underscores its inherent operational flexibility and broad applicability across diverse mission profiles.
