Italian Eurofighter Sustains Damage in Saudi Arabian Air Base Attack Amid Regional Tensions

Italy’s Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, has confirmed that an Italian Air Force Eurofighter F-2000 combat aircraft was struck during an aerial assault targeting Taif Air Base in Saudi Arabia. The aircraft was operating as part of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) when the incident occurred.

In an official statement, Minister Crosetto indicated that he is closely monitoring the situation following the nocturnal air attacks on the base, where Italian military personnel are stationed. He clarified, “No Italian military personnel sustained injuries. During the assault, an Italian F-2000 aircraft, positioned within the base perimeter but outside its central operations area, was impacted. No other Italian-operated vehicles or essential infrastructure suffered damage.” Crosetto further assured, “I have been reconfirmed that comprehensive security protocols to safeguard our military personnel have been in effect for an extended period. I am slated to receive an immediate briefing at the Ministry of Defense. The situation is being managed with utmost vigilance to guarantee the complete safety of our personnel and to ensure all actions are taken with due responsibility.”

This incident unfolds amidst a recent escalation of missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks by Iranian-backed Houthi forces from Yemen against various targets within Saudi Arabia.

This is not the first instance of Italian forward-deployed assets facing hostile action in the region. On March 15, 2022, an earlier Iranian attack on Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait resulted in damage to one of four Italian Eurofighters and the destruction of an Italian MQ-9A Reaper UAV. Following that engagement, Italy strategically repositioned its aerial platforms to Taif (officially known as King Fahd Air Base) in western Saudi Arabia, simultaneously enhancing the local air defense umbrella. Taif’s location near the Red Sea coast offers a defensive advantage, placing it beyond the operational range of many fixed-direction kamikaze UAVs launched from the east, while remaining strategically close enough for rapid intervention in contested airspace.

Italy maintains a substantial military footprint in the broader Gulf region, organized under Task Force Air-Arabia, with elements deployed across Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain. This contingent includes the Taif-based Task Group Typhoon, comprising four F-2000 combat aircraft; Task Group Argo, equipped with an E-550A early warning aircraft; and a C-130J providing tactical airlift capabilities. Additionally, approximately 300 Italian Army personnel are stationed in the area, operating a SAMP/T air and missile defense battery, KRONOS radars situated in both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and a Skynex Anti-UAV system deployed in the UAE.
