A Russian Mi-8 military transport helicopter was reportedly downed by friendly fire in the Voronezh region on October 1, resulting in the tragic loss of all three crew members onboard. According to initial reports from Russian Telegram channels “112” and “Mash,” the incident occurred in the Anninsky district of the Voronezh region. While the specific variant of the Mi-8 involved has not yet been officially identified, “Mash” explicitly attributed the downing to an accidental engagement by Russian forces.
The Voronezh region is a critical hub for various Russian military aviation operations. Units from Russia’s 549th Army Aviation Brigade, known for operating Mi-8 helicopters, are strategically stationed near Voronezh and at adjacent airfields. Furthermore, aircraft belonging to the 15th Army Aviation Brigade of the Russian Aerospace Forces regularly utilize the area. Aviation assets of the Russian National Guard and the FSB Border Guard Service also conduct operations from the Baltimor Air Base, which is located within the region.
The 549th and 15th Army Aviation Brigades employ a diverse fleet of Mi-8 variants, including the modernized Mi-8MTV-5 and Mi-8AMTSh, as well as older models such as the Mi-8MT and Mi-8MTV-1, covering both transport and combat roles. Notably, the Baltimor Air Base also hosts specialized Mi-8MTPR-1 electronic warfare helicopters, designed for dedicated mission sets.
This unfortunate incident follows closely on the heels of another recent Russian military aviation mishap. On September 29, a Tu-95MS strategic bomber, carrying seven military personnel, crashed in the Amur region of Russia’s Far East near the village of Krasnoyarovo. Early reports indicated six fatalities and one hospitalized individual from that crash.
