The U.S. Air Force and Northrop Grumman recently confirmed an agreement to leverage previously allocated funding of $4.5 billion to boost the B-21’s annual production capacity by 25%. The program remains on track for its initial aircraft delivery to Ellsworth Air Force Base in 2027, with the service target set at acquiring a minimum of 100 B-21s, each with an average unit recurring flyaway cost projected at $692 million in 2022 base year prices.

The early involvement of operational test personnel serves a practical acquisition and development purpose. It enables the identification of potential issues related to crew interface, mission planning, maintenance procedures, or weapon employment well before production rates significantly increase, at which point modifications become substantially more costly and time-consuming.
