Hellenic Air Force F-4 Phantom II Suffers Fatal Crash During Athens Airshow

A Hellenic Air Force (HAF) F-4E Phantom II combat aircraft tragically crashed during a solo aerial display at the Athens Flying Week airshow. The incident occurred on the inaugural day of the prestigious event, held at Tanagra Air Base, situated north of Athens. Following the impact, a substantial column of dark smoke billowed from the crash site, prompting the immediate deployment of firefighting assets, including helicopters, to suppress the blaze.

Eyewitness accounts and initial video footage from the scene did not indicate that the two-person flight crew had ejected. Subsequent reports have regrettably confirmed that both pilots aboard the F-4E Phantom II perished in the accident, despite earlier statements from Greek authorities regarding ongoing search and rescue efforts.

The F-4E Phantom II’s presence at Athens Flying Week was notably highlighted by organizers as one of its penultimate public demonstrations before its anticipated phased retirement from HAF service. Greece remains one of a limited number of nations globally that continues to operate a modernized F-4E AUP (Avionics Upgrade Program) Phantom II fleet, which is currently assigned to the 338th Squadron based at Andravida Air Base.

The airshow’s program also featured a diverse array of military aircraft, including the F-16 Viper, Dassault Rafale, Mirage 2000-5, M-346, the HAF’s F-16 “Zeus” demonstration team, and the T-6 “Daedalus.” This unfortunate event casts a somber shadow over the aviation spectacle, which aimed to showcase the Hellenic Air Force’s operational prowess and commitment to air defense.
