JMSDF Achieves Milestone with Inaugural Tomahawk Cruise Missile Live-Fire Test

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), with vital support from the United States Navy, has successfully conducted its first-ever live-fire test of the Tomahawk cruise missile. This significant event, confirmed by the Japan Ministry of Defense on July 30, 2026, saw a Tomahawk launched from the Kongo-class destroyer JS Chōkai (DDG-176) on July 29.

The JS Chōkai has been stationed in the United States since 2025, undergoing comprehensive integration and modernization work specifically designed to embed Tomahawk cruise missile capabilities within its naval combat systems. By March 2026, it was announced that JS Chōkai was the first JMSDF platform to complete the necessary vessel modifications and specialized crew training required for Tomahawk operations.

According to the Ministry of Defense, this successful live-fire exercise served to validate the destroyer’s missile launching mechanisms and underscored the crew’s operational proficiency with the sophisticated weapons system. The ministry further highlighted that this achievement signifies robust progress in Japan’s Tomahawk acquisition program, substantially bolstering the JMSDF’s ongoing efforts to develop formidable stand-off defense capabilities.

Imagery released following the test depicts the Tomahawk missile ascending from the ship’s Vertical Launch System (VLS), located forward of the bridge. The distinctive orange banding on the munition indicates it was equipped with telemetry and data collection instruments, standard for test and evaluation purposes. While the Japan Ministry of Defense refrained from disclosing specific technical details regarding the missile’s variant, it confirmed that the JS Chōkai, having completed its modernization and testing protocols, is slated to return to Japan in September 2026.
