New Zealand Finalizes MH-60R Seahawk Fleet Acquisition to Enhance Maritime Defense

New Zealand has formally entered into a significant procurement agreement with the United States for the acquisition of advanced MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, a move poised to substantially bolster its capabilities against evolving subsurface threats. This strategic investment, valued at approximately $940 million, aims to modernize the nation’s naval aviation assets.

On October 16, the New Zealand Ministry of Defence officially announced the signing of a comprehensive agreement with the U.S. government. The package includes five MH-60R Seahawk Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) helicopters, along with their crucial mission systems, a suite of armaments, and essential spare parts. These cutting-edge Seahawk platforms are designated to replace New Zealand’s aging SH-2G Seasprite fleet, with deliveries projected to commence in 2030. The U.S. Department of State had previously cleared the potential foreign military sale, paving the way for this intergovernmental arrangement.

The procurement package specifies a robust armament complement for the new helicopters, including 225 WGU-59/B APKWS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System) guidance kits for rockets, 65 AGM-114R Hellfire missiles, and 5 M240D machine guns. The MH-60R platforms will also integrate Mk54 lightweight anti-submarine torpedoes for direct engagement capabilities against underwater targets.

The MH-60R Seahawk stands as a twin-engine maritime multi-mission helicopter, renowned for its proficiency in both anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) roles. Capable of reaching a maximum speed of approximately 333 km/h (180 knots), the platform can achieve an endurance of up to four hours with the use of supplementary fuel tanks, enabling extended patrol and operational ranges.

Its advanced mission suite features robust capabilities for maritime target detection and tracking, utilizing an onboard radar system, a high-performance dipping sonar, and deployable sonobuoys. A multispectral targeting system further enhances its operational effectiveness by providing superior identification and engagement support. Crucially, the MH-60R is equipped with a Link 16 data link, facilitating seamless sharing of critical tactical information with compatible naval vessels and airborne assets. This connectivity fosters comprehensive joint situational awareness, significantly enhancing coordinated naval operations.

Beyond its primary role in submarine detection and tracking, the MH-60R Seahawk is equally adept at engaging surface threats. The combination of sonobuoys and the dipping sonar remains vital for sophisticated subsurface search operations. For offensive engagements, the helicopter can deploy lightweight torpedoes against detected underwater targets, while AGM-114 Hellfire missiles provide a potent and precise option against surface vessels.

In a related development, the U.S. had also approved a distinct foreign military sale worth approximately $69 million, specifically for Mk54 lightweight torpedoes intended for New Zealand. This package includes 20 Mk54 torpedoes, associated equipment, comprehensive training protocols, and essential logistical support, further equipping the new Seahawk fleet. The Mk54 is a state-of-the-art lightweight torpedo designed for ASW missions, and its full compatibility with the MH-60R Seahawk significantly enhances the platform’s offensive capabilities against subsurface threats.
