Romania Bolsters Amphibious Capabilities with Initial AAV-7 Fleet Deliveries

Romania is significantly enhancing its naval infantry capabilities with the formal integration of the first nine AAV-7 amphibious assault vehicles into its armed forces. This initial batch marks a pivotal step in modernizing the nation’s marine corps. While these vehicles have been formally accepted into the Romanian Naval Forces’ inventory, a public induction ceremony is scheduled for September 28, 2026, at the Babadag garrison in the Tulcea region.

This delivery represents the inaugural phase of a comprehensive procurement program initiated in 2023, under which Romania will acquire a total of 65 AAV-7 platforms from the United States. The acquisition plan is structured into two main stages: 21 vehicles will be delivered in the first phase, followed by 44 in the second. The Romanian Naval Forces anticipate a phased delivery schedule, with all units expected to be received between 2026 and 2031.

The AAV-7 is a robust, tracked amphibious assault vehicle renowned for its dual operational capability on both land and water. Engineered to transport personnel and equipment from ship to shore and subsequently engage in ground operations, the vehicle accommodates a crew of three and can carry up to 21 fully-equipped marine infantry personnel or approximately 5 tons of cargo. Its standard armament suite features a 12.7mm M2 heavy machine gun co-mounted with a 40mm Mk-19 automatic grenade launcher on a single turret.

Manufactured by BAE Systems, the AAV-7 family has been a cornerstone of the U.S. Marine Corps’ amphibious assault operations for decades. Demonstrating formidable mobility, the AAV-7 can achieve speeds of approximately 70 km/h on land, while its twin water jets propel it through water at speeds of around 13 km/h.

This strategic acquisition aligns with Romania’s long-standing efforts to enhance interoperability with NATO allies. The 307th Marine Infantry Regiment “Heracleea” already possesses considerable familiarity with the AAV-7, having participated in joint training exercises and multinational drills with the U.S. Marine Corps, utilizing American AAV-7 assets since 2011. This prior experience is expected to facilitate a seamless integration and rapid operationalization of Romania’s new amphibious fleet.
