Swedish Air Force Accelerates Gripen’s TAURUS Integration with Inaugural Live-Fire Test

The Swedish Air Force has achieved a significant milestone in its defense modernization strategy, successfully conducting the inaugural live-fire test of the TAURUS KEPD 350 long-range cruise missile from a JAS 39C Gripen fighter jet. This pivotal test, meticulously documented by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), signals a rapid acceleration in the integration timeline for this advanced standoff weapon.

While initial plans had slated the TAURUS KEPD 350 for operational deployment by 2028, the Swedish Air Force has fast-tracked its integration efforts. This strategic imperative underscores the nation’s commitment to bolstering its long-range strike capabilities, a critical enhancement previously emphasized by Major General Jonas Wikman, Commander of the Swedish Air Force.

Swedish aerospace industry leader Saab has consistently positioned the TAURUS KEPD 350 as a compatible armament for the Gripen platform, highlighting this synergy since the early 2000s. In 2002, the company explicitly listed the JAS 39 Gripen among fighter aircraft capable of deploying the missile. Despite this longstanding conceptual compatibility, formal initiatives for TAURUS procurement and Gripen integration were officially announced by Sweden in February 2025. Saab had also previously released visual renditions depicting a Gripen carrying two TAURUS missiles.

Concurrently, the FMV confirmed plans in 2025 for a comprehensive modernization program involving 60 Gripen C/D aircraft. These upgraded jets are intended to maintain operational readiness alongside the newer Gripen E/F variants. Deliveries of Gripen C/D aircraft upgraded to the MS20 Block 3 configuration are projected to commence in 2026, with the more advanced MS20 Block 4 configuration expected to enter service by 2028. Following the successful integration efforts on the Gripen C, the TAURUS KEPD 350 is anticipated to be subsequently integrated onto the next-generation Gripen E platform.

The TAURUS KEPD 350 is a premier air-launched, long-range cruise missile developed by TAURUS Systems GmbH, a joint venture between MBDA Deutschland and Saab. Boasting an operational range exceeding 500 kilometers, this formidable missile is engineered to neutralize high-value, hardened, and deeply buried targets, including command centers, bunkers, airbases, and other critical infrastructure. To enhance survivability against sophisticated enemy air defenses, the TAURUS is capable of navigating at extremely low altitudes, reportedly as low as 35 meters, while maintaining a high subsonic speed of Mach 0.95, approximately 1,170 kilometers per hour. Its advanced guidance suite integrates inertial navigation, GPS, terrain-referenced navigation, and image-referenced navigation, ensuring precise adherence to a predetermined flight path towards its designated target. The missile is armed with a substantial 481-kilogram MEPHISTO (Multi-Effect Penetrator, High Sophisticated and Target Optimized) dual-stage warhead, specifically designed for optimal penetration and destruction of reinforced and subterranean structures.
