Turkish Navy to Significantly Bolster Amphibious Capabilities with Two Additional Bayraktar-Class LSTs

The Turkish Naval Forces Command is set to receive a substantial boost to its amphibious operations capabilities following a recent procurement decision. Insider information indicates that the Defense Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) has approved the construction of two new Bayraktar-class Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) for the Turkish Navy. The contract signing for these vessels is anticipated imminently, marking the start of their construction phase.

Currently, the Turkish Navy operates two Bayraktar-class LSTs, namely TCG Bayraktar (L-402) and TCG Sancaktar (L-403). The forthcoming vessels are expected to be built to a similar configuration, ensuring seamless integration and operational consistency with the existing fleet. This expansion will double the number of Bayraktar-class LSTs in service, significantly enhancing Turkey’s capacity for force projection and maritime expeditionary operations.

Given the Turkish Navy’s expanding amphibious mission profile in recent years, the addition of two more platforms is strategically vital. It is anticipated that this expansion will empower the Navy to conduct simultaneous operations in various regions, thereby strengthening its ability to undertake diverse tasks and maintain a persistent presence.

Developed and constructed by Anadolu Shipyard for the Turkish Naval Forces, the Bayraktar-class LSTs are formidable platforms. Each vessel measures approximately 138 meters in length and has a full-load displacement of about 7,400 tons. These ships are designed to transport a wide array of military assets to shore, including main battle tanks, armored vehicles, personnel, and various logistical payloads.

Key capabilities of the Bayraktar-class include the ability to carry four Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel (LCVPs), each with a capacity for approximately 40 personnel. This facilitates the rapid and efficient disembarkation of amphibious units onto coastal areas. Furthermore, the platforms are equipped with a flight deck, enabling helicopter operations for aircraft up to the 15-ton class.

Beyond their transport roles, the Bayraktar-class LSTs are designed for extended endurance and operational reach. With a maximum speed of 18 knots and a range exceeding 5,000 nautical miles, they are well-suited for prolonged missions. Each LST can accommodate a crew of 146 alongside a marine task force of 370 personnel. Their cargo holds can transport between 13 and 18 main battle tanks, up to 60 armored personnel carriers, and a total of 1,200 tons of diverse cargo into operational zones.

The vessels incorporate advanced sensor and weapon systems for enhanced situational awareness and self-defense. These include a 3D search radar, low-observable radar systems, electronic support measures (ESM), an infrared search and track (IRST) system, and laser warning receivers. For close-in defense, they are armed with two Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS), 40mm cannons, remote-controlled weapon systems (RCWS), and various jamming and decoy systems, providing robust protection against aerial and surface threats.
