U.S. State Department Greenlights Potential $832 Million Javelin Anti-Tank Missile Sale to Egypt

The U.S. Department of State has issued preliminary approval for a significant Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Egypt, encompassing 2,020 FGM-148F Javelin anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and 200 associated Command Launch Units (CLUs). The estimated value of this comprehensive defense package could reach up to $832 million.

Beyond the missile and launch units, the proposed acquisition includes crucial support elements such as simulators, specialized training devices, essential spare parts, secure operational equipment, detailed training manuals, and a robust logistical support infrastructure. Notably, the requested missile quantity incorporates 20 units specifically designated for testing purposes within the United States. While Washington has given its nod to the potential sale, it is important to clarify that a definitive procurement contract between Egypt and the prime contractors has not yet been finalized.

The Javelin system, a collaborative product of Lockheed Martin and RTX Corporation, is renowned as a premier shoulder-fired, man-portable, and guided anti-tank missile system. Its distinctive “fire-and-forget” capability, facilitated by a lock-on before launch mechanism, enables the missile to autonomously track its target post-launch. This operational advantage allows the gunner to immediately reposition or seek cover after firing.

Under most engagement scenarios, the Javelin boasts an effective range spanning from approximately 65 meters to over 4 kilometers. The system offers two distinct attack modes: a “Top Attack” profile, optimized for exploiting the thinner top armor of main battle tanks, and a “Direct Attack” mode, suitable for engaging fortifications, lightly armored vehicles, or low-flying helicopters. Target acquisition and tracking are managed by the missile’s passive imaging infrared (IIR) seeker.

The FGM-148F variant, central to this proposed sale, is equipped with an Enhanced Multi-Purpose Warhead (MPWH). This advanced warhead is engineered to effectively neutralize modern armored threats, including those protected by explosive reactive armor (ERA), while its fragmentation steel body enhances its effectiveness against soft targets and personnel.

This potential Javelin acquisition follows another substantial U.S. approval in May 2022 for Egypt to procure 5,070 TOW 2A RF anti-tank missiles and related support equipment, valued at an estimated $691 million. Similar to the current Javelin proposal, a definitive contract for the TOW 2A RF missiles has yet to be executed.
