The United States Navy has officially introduced the AIM-424 Malice, a sophisticated long-range air-to-air missile (LRAAM) poised to significantly transform aerial combat capabilities for its carrier air wings. Developed by Raytheon, the AIM-424 Malice is specifically engineered for integration across key naval aviation platforms, including the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the F-35C Lightning II, and the conceptual F/A-XX next-generation fighter.
Designated by the U.S. Navy as a Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile, the Malice aims to substantially extend the engagement range, enhance survivability, and boost the air-to-air operational effectiveness of both Navy and Marine Corps aviation assets. Its strategic objectives include fortifying fleet defense against increasingly advanced long-range airborne threats and maintaining the critical “first-look, first-shot, first-kill” advantage in future aerial engagements.
The AIM-424 boasts an impressive maximum operational range exceeding 463 kilometers (approximately 287 miles or 250 nautical miles). This formidable weapon system, weighing approximately 680 kilograms (1,500 pounds), is propelled by a robust solid-propellant rocket motor and carries a high-explosive blast-fragmentation warhead. Its physical specifications include a length of 4.11 meters (13.5 feet), a diameter of 34 centimeters (13.4 inches), and a wingspan of 67 centimeters (26.4 inches).
Designed for broad compatibility, the AIM-424 Malice is being developed to seamlessly integrate with fourth, fifth, and projected sixth-generation combat aircraft. Test imagery released by the Navy illustrates the F/A-18E Super Hornet carrying four of these missiles externally, while the F-35C Lightning II demonstrates its capacity to accommodate the Malice within its internal weapons bay, thus preserving its low-observable characteristics.
Phil Jasper, President of Raytheon, emphasized the missile’s strategic importance, stating that the AIM-424 Malice represents a “generational leap” in air superiority capability through its significantly extended reach and enhanced combat efficacy. The Malice is expected to surpass the performance benchmarks of the U.S.’s current AIM-120 AMRAAM and the more recently unveiled AIM-174B missiles.
Currently undergoing rigorous development and flight testing, the precise in-service date for the AIM-424 Malice has not been publicly announced. The U.S. Navy has indicated that specific detailed capabilities and the deployment timeline remain classified due to operational security imperatives.
