Bulgaria Bolsters F-16 Fleet with Major US Missile Acquisition

The United States has given its approval for a significant new missile procurement package for the Bulgarian Air Force, valued at approximately $957 million, destined to arm its incoming F-16 Block 70 fighter jets. This acquisition will provide Bulgaria with 125 units of the AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile), a critical beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air munition, alongside 4 units of the AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II, a state-of-the-art within-visual-range (WVR) air-to-air missile. The comprehensive package also encompasses essential spare parts, technical support, critical maintenance services, and integrated logistics support elements.

With this latest sale, Bulgaria’s total investment in its F-16 Block 70 program, including the aircraft, associated weapon systems, and support packages, now stands at an estimated $2.63 billion. The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) released a statement indicating that this new procurement will substantially enhance the operational effectiveness of Bulgaria’s forthcoming F-16 Block 70 fleet. These newly acquired munitions are expected to bolster the Bulgarian Air Force’s capabilities across various critical missions, including air policing operations, safeguarding national airspace, contributing to deterrence efforts, and ensuring robust participation in NATO joint operations.

Bulgaria initiated its F-16 Block 70 program to replace its aging Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets, pursuing the acquisition through two distinct contracts. Initially, Sofia inked a deal with the U.S. in 2019 for 8 F-16 Block 70 aircraft. A subsequent order for an additional 8 jets in 2022 expanded the total procurement to 16 aircraft. The first F-16 Block 70 for Bulgaria is slated for delivery in February 2025, with the full complement of 8 aircraft from the initial batch expected to be delivered within 2025. The second batch of 8 F-16 Block 70 fighters is projected for delivery by the close of 2027. This strategic acquisition path is designed to equip the Bulgarian Air Force with a fully NATO-interoperable F-16 fleet, aligning its aerial capabilities with alliance standards. Washington emphasized that this recently approved sale represents an additional weapons package, distinct from the armaments specified in the original F-16 notification.

The AIM-120C-8, a U.S.-developed and produced BVR air-to-air missile, is engineered for long-range air combat engagements. It boasts an impressive range of approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) and utilizes an advanced guidance system coupled with an RF (Radio Frequency) seeker head, enabling high-precision target tracking and significantly improved engagement success rates. The AIM-120C-8 is a widely adopted missile among NATO allies and numerous other air forces globally, and it also forms a critical component of ground-based air defense systems like NASAMS.

The AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II, another U.S.-developed and produced air-to-air missile, is tailored for WVR air combat scenarios, offering effective engagement capabilities against short-range threats. Equipped with an advanced guidance system and an IIR (Imaging Infrared) seeker head, it ensures high-precision target tracking and enhances kill probability. The AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II is extensively deployed by the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and other NATO allies, distinguished by its versatile integration capabilities across diverse platforms.
