Hanwha Aerospace Forges Emirati Alliance for Local K9 Howitzer Manufacturing

South Korean defense titan Hanwha Aerospace has entered into a strategic partnership with the Emirati conglomerate Generation 5 Holding, initiating plans for the joint production of K9 155mm self-propelled howitzers within the United Arab Emirates. This collaboration is designed to cater specifically to the burgeoning defense requirements across the broader Middle East region.

The announcement, made on the sidelines of the Eurosatory defense expo in Paris, underscores Hanwha Aerospace’s determined push to reinforce its footprint in the Middle East. The company’s strategy prioritizes localized manufacturing, comprehensive lifecycle support, and advanced technology transfer initiatives, all aimed at establishing closer ties with regional clients and fostering indigenous industrial capabilities where their advanced systems operate.

Under the terms of the agreement, Generation 5 Holding is slated to provide essential backing for local K9 production endeavors and facilitate market penetration. Khalifa Murad Alblooshi, Managing Director of Generation 5 Holding, emphasized the strategic synergy: “By integrating our manufacturing prowess and industrial capabilities, we are exceptionally positioned to develop, produce, and deliver high-performance howitzer systems to our clientele. This aligns perfectly with our overarching strategy to localize and transfer cutting-edge defense manufacturing technologies.”

Il Sung, Hanwha Aerospace’s head for the Middle East and North Africa, reaffirmed the region’s criticality to the company’s global vision. “The Middle East stands as a priority market for Hanwha Aerospace. Cultivating robust partnerships with local industry leaders is fundamental to expanding our regional presence. By manufacturing and supporting the K9 locally, we aim to bolster our partners’ defense sovereignty and furnish regional customers with a formidable artillery system complemented by proximate operational support,” Sung stated.

The K9 Thunder, a highly regarded 155mm self-propelled artillery platform, boasts a proven track record, including a significant $1.7 billion co-production contract with Egypt in 2022. This previous agreement saw substantial subsystem manufacturing integrated into Egypt’s Factory 200, demonstrating Hanwha’s commitment to localization. This new Emirati venture comes amidst a sharp increase in global demand for 155mm artillery systems, a tactical imperative brought into sharp focus by recent international conflicts.

Generation 5 Holding’s portfolio includes Calidus, an Emirati developer and manufacturer renowned for its advanced aircraft and armored vehicles. Calidus also designs proprietary missile systems, notably the 140mm ALHEDA ground-to-ground missile, which is adaptable for various armored platforms, including light infantry fighting vehicles, and has reportedly been contracted by the UAE armed forces. This background solidifies Generation 5 Holding’s capability as a strategic industrial partner for such a sophisticated defense program.
