Hellenic Navy Confirms FREMM Frigate Acquisition and MEKO Modernization Initiatives

Athens, Greece – The Hellenic Navy is poised for a significant enhancement of its operational capabilities following the official approval of a comprehensive naval procurement and modernization program. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during his weekly national assessment report on governmental activities, publicly disclosed key decisions emanating from the recent National Security Government Council (KYSEA) meeting.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis announced KYSEA’s formal endorsement for the acquisition of two Italian-built FREMM (Bergamini-class) frigates, along with a crucial mid-life modernization (MLU) program for the existing MEKO 200 HN class frigates currently in the Hellenic Navy’s inventory. This strategic move is designed to bolster Greece’s naval power Projection and defensive posture in the coming decades.

The two frigates slated for acquisition are identified as the “Carlo Bergamini” and “Virginio Fasan,” both active vessels within the Italian Navy’s fleet. Barring any unforeseen complications, the delivery schedule anticipates the “Carlo Bergamini” joining the Hellenic Navy in 2029, followed by the “Virginio Fasan” in 2030.

Elaborating on further defense advancements, the Prime Minister also revealed the initiation of a procurement process for new cryptographic devices. This crucial initiative aims to significantly elevate the communication security protocols across all branches of the Hellenic Armed Forces.

Financially, the initial “bare” acquisition cost for the two frigates, encompassing their hulls and existing core equipment, is estimated to range between €480 and €500 million. However, the total program expenditure is projected to fall within the €750 to €850 million bracket, dependent on the selected duration for integrated logistics and technical support. This comprehensive cost includes the integration of essential munitions, missiles, and torpedo systems. The overall contract value is reported to be approximately €800 million.

This pivotal defense program is structured as an intergovernmental agreement (G2G) between Greece and Italy. The final contractual arrangements are anticipated to be formalized and signed before the close of 2026, marking a significant milestone in Hellenic naval defense modernization.
