The U.S. State Department has given its preliminary approval for a substantial Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Austria, valued at an estimated $1.5 billion. This proposed agreement encompasses the procurement of 12 advanced UH-60M Black Hawk utility helicopters, along with a comprehensive suite of associated systems and logistical support. The finalization of this significant defense acquisition is contingent upon the completion of congressional review and approval processes in the United States.
The extensive package includes not only the airframes but also 26 General Electric T700-GE-701D turboshaft engines, critical communication systems, and state-of-the-art avionics. Meeting Austria’s specific requirements, the sale features sophisticated self-protection capabilities, including the AN/AAR-57 Common Missile Warning System (CMWS), the Common Infrared Countermeasures (CIRCM) System, and the AN/APR-39E(V)2 Radar Warning Receiver. Mission systems such as the EAGLE-M+429 and AN/ARC-231A SATCOM radios are also designated for inclusion. Further components comprise advanced navigation and identification systems, radar equipment, and various safety enhancements.
Beyond hardware, the FMS program is designed to provide comprehensive technical documentation, specialized maintenance equipment, rigorous personnel training, and ongoing engineering support to the Austrian Armed Forces. To facilitate the smooth implementation and integration of this program, approximately 30 U.S. government and contractor personnel are projected to be deployed to Austria. Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky division will serve as the principal contractor for the program.
The U.S. State Department highlighted that this prospective sale is expected to bolster Austria’s capabilities to deter existing and future threats, thereby contributing significantly to regional stability and security.
Austria currently operates a fleet of nine S-70A-42 Black Hawk helicopters, which entered service in 2002. These rotorcraft are primarily utilized for personnel transport in challenging mountainous terrain, disaster relief operations, search and rescue (SAR) missions, and general logistical support. While Austria had previously pursued efforts to expand its Black Hawk fleet to 12 airframes, those prior acquisition attempts did not materialize. This new UH-60M order is therefore poised to substantially modernize and significantly expand the nation’s rotary-wing capabilities in the coming years.
The UH-60M Black Hawk, representing the current standard utility helicopter for the U.S. Army, offers marked advancements over earlier variants. It features more powerful engines, a fully integrated digital cockpit (commonly referred to as a “glass cockpit”), and enhanced mission flexibility across diverse operational requirements. Capable of tactical troop and cargo transport, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), special operations support, and humanitarian aid, the UH-60M is powered by two T700-GE-701D turboshaft engines. It can transport 11 fully equipped personnel, carry an external sling load of approximately four metric tons, and achieve a maximum speed of 300 km/h with an operational range exceeding 500 kilometers. Its advanced features include sophisticated navigation systems and integrated mission computers.
