Embraer Forges Strategic Alliance with Hellenic Aerospace Industry to Bolster European Defense Footprint

Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer has formalized a significant strategic partnership with the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI), signing a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement marks a pivotal step in Embraer’s strategy to expand its defense and logistical network across Europe and enhance the region’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) infrastructure.

The MoU, signed by Fabio Caparica, Vice President of Contracts for Embraer Defence & Security, and Alexandros Diakopoulos, Chief Executive Officer of Hellenic Aerospace Industry, is designed to elevate strategic collaboration within the aviation, space, and defense sectors. A primary objective is to cultivate operational and logistical self-sufficiency for the Hellenic Air Force’s (HAF) forthcoming fleet of Embraer C-390 Millennium multi-role tactical transport aircraft, concurrently fostering the development of Greece’s indigenous industrial capabilities.

This alliance reinforces Embraer’s long-term vision to strengthen its market presence in Europe, facilitating corporate growth and contributing to the advancement of the continent’s broader aerospace and defense ecosystem.

Alexandros Diakopoulos, CEO of Hellenic Aerospace Industry, underscored the strategic depth of the agreement. “Signing this Memorandum of Understanding with Embraer transcends a mere commercial transaction. It reflects our conviction that HAI can and should be the natural partner for world-class aerospace companies seeking reliable collaborators in Europe,” Diakopoulos stated. “Developing C-390 maintenance and support capabilities in Greece will not only address the operational imperatives of the Hellenic Air Force but also lay the groundwork for a robust, long-term industrial base within our nation. This synergy of operational autonomy and industrial advancement precisely defines HAI’s strategic trajectory.”

In related developments, the Embraer C-390 Millennium has been officially integrated into Greece’s Long-Term Defense Procurement Program. This move is a crucial component of the HAF’s modernization efforts, aiming to supersede its long-serving fleet of U.S.-manufactured C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. The procurement plan initially recommends the acquisition of at least three C-390s, with provisions for additional aircraft options in subsequent phases. While this potential acquisition is structured within a 12-year defense planning framework, its full implementation is anticipated towards the end of the current decade, partly due to competing defense priorities, including the ongoing upgrade of 38 F-16 Block 50 fighter jets to the Viper configuration.
