Ukraine Fortifies Air Capability with Swedish Gripen Fighter Acquisition

Ukraine is set to significantly bolster its aerial combat capabilities through a multi-faceted agreement with Sweden for the provision of Saab Gripen fighter jets. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, speaking at a recent joint press conference, detailed plans for Ukraine to acquire 20 new Gripen fighter aircraft, complemented by a donation of 16 older-model jets from Sweden commencing next year.

This strategic procurement builds upon a Letter of Intent signed by the two leaders last year, which outlined a potential pathway for Ukraine to purchase up to 150 Gripen E multirole fighters. While deliveries of the newly ordered aircraft are anticipated several years from now, Ukraine’s Defense Minister previously indicated that a definitive agreement for the Gripen E could be finalized within months, following the European Union’s approval of a substantial €90 billion (approximately $105 billion) credit facility for Ukraine.

During the press briefing at Uppsala Air Base, where two Gripen aircraft were displayed, Prime Minister Kristersson emphasized the platform’s suitability for Ukraine. “The Gripen represents the optimal and most appropriate choice for Ukraine. Today marks a significant step forward in this collaborative journey,” Kristersson stated. President Zelenskyy echoed this sentiment, calling the acquisition a “truly new chapter” for Ukraine. He reaffirmed plans to eventually procure all 150 aircraft initially outlined in the LoI, expressing confidence in securing the necessary financing.

Defense industry reports indicate that the immediate transfer of the older-generation Gripen C/D models will provide Ukraine with a crucial interim air defense solution. Of the EU’s €90 billion credit package, Ukraine has earmarked €2.5 billion specifically for these aircraft. The anticipated delivery timeline for the new-build Gripen E models extends to 2030 and beyond.

Saab CEO Micael Johansson hailed the development as a momentous occasion for the company, affirming that the agreement would amplify the Gripen’s global momentum. Speaking to Reuters, Johansson noted, “The more nations that select the Gripen fighter, and the more it operates in diverse countries, the more widely its exceptional capabilities become recognized.” This deal underscores Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to modernize its air force and enhance its defense posture against evolving threats. Ukrainian pilots have already commenced training on the Gripen platform, signaling the commencement of its integration into the nation’s air combat doctrine.
